Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
