Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
